CHAPTER
I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Indonesian is a big country, which consists of
variety ethnic groups of people. Every ethnic group has its own culture
including language. Human is one component that plays an important role by the
ability in creating innovations in various aspects of live. Blomfield (1995:1)
asserts that Language is a communication and it plays an important role in
human life. It means that language is a means used by people for daily
communication among the members of the society.
Every country has national language and vernacular.
Talk about national language means that a language that used by all of the
people in one country, but vernacular is language that used by all of the
people in the village. Sanga, (1990:125) asserts that: in vernacular, we talk
about who we are, where we from, about our culture and certainly about our
background. Its means that vernacular talks about culture, language and all the
activities that regarded to Uab Meto its self of Timor culture.
East Nusa Tenggara is one of the provinces in Indonesia,
which has many local languages. Grimes, (1997:24) asserts that: There are 77
local languages spoken in East Nusa Tenggara province. This area has many local
language because every almost tribe in this area almost has its own language,
such as Timor island which has many local languages.
Uab Meto is a language in East Nusa Tenggara spoken
by people of Timor. This language has specific characteristics used by the
people. There are social activities in which Timorese is quite significantly
used such as in meeting, praying, singing in church, and ceremonies.
The name of Uab Meto is the speakers’ name of their
own language (Grimes et al 1997:36). Timorese usually to call them self as
Atoni Meto while the name of their language is Uab Meto. It has wide area to
use which include four regencies namely: Kupang Regency, South Central Timor
Regency, North Central Timor Regency, Belu Regency. There are ten dialects in
Uab Meto, they are: Amarasi dialects, Fatule’u dialect, Amfoang dialect,
Amanuban dialect, Amanatun dialect, Mollo dialect, Miamafo dialect, Insana
dialect, Biboki dialect, and Manlea dialect (Grimes et al, 1997:33). Most of
speaker in South Central Timor Regency that speak it in three different
dialects. There are three main dialects namely: Amanuban, Amanatun, and Mollo
dialect.
Based on the explanation above, the writer concludes
that Uab Meto is divided based on the use of different accent. The Mollo dialect,
Amanatun dialect, and Amanuban dialect are spoken in more than one village with
various accent and intonation. In here, the writers just take the inhabitants
of South Central Timor Regency as the object of this research.
Talking about language, we also talking about
grammar. Grammar is a study how to arrange words that certain forms become a
great sentence (Haryono at al 1995:13). One part of the grammar that the writer
to research is about possessive.
Possessive is noun, pronoun, adjective which changes
its form to show that it owns or is closely related to something else (Macafee,
1994:1). Heather (1996: 50) asserts
that the possessive form is used with nouns revering to groups of people,
country, and animals. In this case, the writer is interested about the rules of
Uab Meto that spoken in South Central Timor Regency. Based on the theory from
Fromklin and Rodman (1994: 208) who asserts that possessive has six types, there are: possessive pronoun,
possessive with appositive form, double possessive, compound possessive,
meaning of compound, and possessive adjective. Possessive in Uab Meto is
usually used by the speaker (Atoni Meto) in daily conversation but the speaker
sometimes do not realized about it. That is why the writer is interested in
studying it as an important part to be known by the speakers of Uab Meto.
